Summer Tips
Dehydration is one of the most common problems in the US, affecting 75% of the population. It is made worse in the summer. Make sure you drink half your body weight in ounces per day to keep you hydrated and to help your kidneys and your brain!
Common Summer Injuries
- Back Pain: In the summertime more exercises with forward movement like gardening can cause back pain.
- Plantar Fasciitis: This is an injury to the bottom of the foot causing inflammation and pain, usually worse first thing in the morning. Due to the increase in physical activity like walking and running during the summer months, this can be more pervasive right now. One of the most popular ways our clinic treats this is by therapeutic Ultrasound.
- Tennis Elbow: Also known as golfers elbow, this is commonly treated in the summertime. This is due to repetitive movement and overuse of the tendons, muscles, and joints(not always causes by golf or tennis).
- Knee Injuries: These injuries are more common since biking and running become a more popular workout in the summer months.
- Strains/Sprains: Sprain and Strain injuries occur more frequently in the summertime since people are hiking and walking rocky nature and river trails more frequently. Most of these injuries happen from slipping or strenuous leg movements like climbing large rocks or steep hills.
- Shoulder Injuries: Some of the most common shoulder injuries we see in the summer months consist of Impingement Syndrome, Bursitis, Tendinitis, and Tendon
- Ruptures/Tears: These conditions are often caused by a new and/or a change in activity, overhead activity, or heavy lifting. All of these conditions can cause pain and discomfort in the shoulder, but most are easily treated with rest, anti-inflammatory medications, and work with range-of-motion.
